The Grudge

I should have known.

Absolutely the biggest mistake I made regarding this movie was thinking I could enjoy a viewing of it on opening night. The theater was pretty crowded, but there were still seats available. People wouldn't STFU and I was REALLY getting upset. Then some nasty stinky mf'er took off his shoes and I was ready to clear OUT! It was DEBILITATING! Kids were screaming and parents were telling their kids to be quiet- OKAY! QUESTIONS:

Why the HELL would you bring your kids to a rated R horror movie when the critics say it's VERY SCARY?!?! Have you NO scruples? A: Nobody wants to hear your kids. B: You NEED to see the movie opening night so badly that you're willing to drag along your 7 year old??

And let me just reiterate- films are NOT interactive. If you scream "Don't open the door", please know that they WILL open the door EVERY TIME!!

Other than that- The movie was very creepy. I would like to see it again without all of the distractions. I guess I've seen one too many David Lynch films for it to really affect me, but it was pretty good. Once again, they gave away too many of the good parts in the trailer, but it was worth the trip. I'll just have to remember to take that trip in the 4th or 5th week after the release, or bring earplugs and a gas mask next time.

Army of Darkness

This movie is one of the funniest damn horror movies EVER! Bruce Campbell gets transported back in time to 1300AD and is forced to fight an army of skeletons and zombies, yet he still has his chainsaw and "boom-boom stick" 12 guage shotgun from the sporting goods department of the store where he works. "Shop Smart! Shop S-Mart!"

I couldn't help but laugh out loud more than once watching this movie... "Good... Bad... I'm the guy with the gun." "First you wanna kill me; now you wanna kiss me. Blow!"

This movie had so many hilarious one-liners and BRUCE- sexy sexy man... YOU MUST SEE THIS MOVIE IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT ALREADY! If you have, SEE IT AGAIN!!

Supersize Me

Supersize Me was a very enlightening, interesting documentary about a man who goes on a 30 day McDonald's diet.

Morgan Spurlock has a girlfriend who is a Vegan chef, so he's used to eating very healthy food and taking multi-vitamins. Then he spends 30 days eating McDonalds to figure out what health risks he is taking by going on a high-fat binge.

Day 3, he orders a double quarter pounder with cheese super sized value meal and throws it up 15 minutes later.

It is a most interesting take on the US's obsession with fast food and with the obesity epidemic in America. I found myself going "How can he EAT that??" more than once.

Now, I enjoy going to McDonalds as much as the next person. Okay, so I like to go when I'm drunk. Who cares? I think it's a common fact that it's not good for you, but it sure makes you feel good, as Morgan pointed out. You feel lethargic until you eat again. I would like to know what kind of opiates are in McDonald's food and whether or not it's proven to be addictive.

In the movie, they DO have a graphic surgical procedure set to music, and if you can watch that sort of thing, it's very funny. Anyway- I would definitely recommend this movie.

Salem's Lot and Cujo

Halloween is on it's way- only 6 days left!! So to celebrate, we watched Salem's Lot and Cujo this weekend!

Salem's Lot- How the hell long is that movie anyway?!? Good god... It was very campy cheesy 1970's vampire film. It was very long and creepy, and I can see how a child might find it scary. The blue guy was WEIRD-O-RAMA and the vampire scenes were really bad... but what do you want? It's the 1970's.

Still, Stephen King has produced many creepy stories, and this one was creepy but disappointing. I'm sure the book is much better.

Cujo- ET's Dee Wallace gets trapped in her Pinto by the infamous rabid dog. It's a really great concept, and an okay movie. There was far too much drama going on in her marriage for my liking, but I guess that's the way King wrote it. Overall, it was an okay movie, but not as scary as Rachel on Friends makes it out to be.

Saved!

Jena Malone, Macaulay Culkin, Mandy Moore, Patrick Fugit, Heather Matarazzo, and Mary Louise Parker star in a movie about kids that attend a Christian school and the most popular kids are the ones who claim to love Jesus the most.

Jena Malone finds out in the beginning of the movie that her boyfriend is gay, and gets a visit from Jesus himself, telling her to "save" him by not "saving" herself. She becomes pregnant and is ostracized by all of her friends. She finds solace in the one heathen who attends the school- which is the best role in the script. Imagine, a Christian school full of nutjobs and holy rollers that see an unsaved girl speaking in tongues and "feel the power of the Holy Spirit" while the heathen screams out in a foreign language "I have a hot pussy!!"

Unfortunately, even Donnie Darko's girlfriend wasn't enough to "save" this movie. It seems Hollywood cannot get enough of these teen-pop sensations (Jessica Simpson, Brittney Spears, Mandy Moore, Hillary Duff) and believe that there is a redeeming quality to giving these girls parts that could be much better suited for someone who actually has talent. Although, arguably, Moore has more talent than the other 3, it still falls far short of someone who might actually bring a redeeming quality to the film.

The film itself had a nostalgic quality to it. I even turned to my sister more than once and said "Oh, man! Do you remember being that deluded??" Because I do. I remember when I thought that my only mission in life was to "save" the heathens. I remember jumping around with my hands in the air and getting excited about going to youth prayer meetings. It was great to see someone focus on the kids who are like I once was...

...not great enough, though.

The Tenant

Roman Polanski does it again.

This time, the movie stars himself as Trelkovsky, a young bachelor who rents out the apartment of a woman who tried to commit suicide. His neighbors are suspicious of him and angry at him for making too much noise, and Trelkovsky begins to lose his grip on reality.

The movie starts out slowly, with different dialects being used (which makes it very confusing). They're speaking about being paid in Francs, and it isn't until one of Polanski's friends comes in bragging about the hooker that gives "the best blowjobs in Paris" that you realize where they are.

One might be tempted to give up before the movie starts to develop any substance, but be assured that if you stick it out, it will be worthwhile. As Marcio says, with any truly good movie, you need to see it more than once to really appreciate it. I will need to watch it again. This time, I won't be so quick to change the channel.

13 Going on 30 & Jersey Girl

I'm back, readers! I took a week off for vacation and was so incredibly busy that I haven't had time to watch any movies. There will be 2 entries today- because I believe that the other movie I'm reviewing deserves it's own review.

I know there was another movie that I rented but damned if I can remember what it was...

13 Going on 30 was an okay movie. Nothing I would set up any roadblocks to see. I saw many many parallel's to Tom Hanks's Big- from the limo drive (ejector seat!!) to the fancy party- Tom Hanks spits caviar all over/Jennifer Garner makes an ass of herself dancing to "Thriller".

I felt that it could have used a bit more substance. The casting was done well- the little girl looked like Garner. And during the Thriller scene I could have sworn that was Hal Sparks. Damn that it wasn't- I really like him and thought he would have done a super job.

Garner was convincing as a 13 year old trapped in a 30 year old's body... BUT... I think it would have been better if we could have seen what she was really like as a 30 year old before the whole wish incident instead of just being shown the outcomes. Let Garner play the bitch for a little bit! I really wanted to see her as a tough business woman as opposed to a 13 year old who came up with a "brilliant" idea. (Which, by the way, would NEVER sell...)

Jersey Girl was another one I wouldn't write home about. It was good- FAR from Kevin Smith's best, but it was okay. Affleck has lost something in the last few years from Chasing Amy/ Good Will Hunting to today. The innocence of a struggling actor to the arrogance of a blockbuster star should not be a factor in talent, but sadly it is. Then again, I can't say Kevin Smith isn't following in the same footsteps. Who would have thought 10 years ago that Kevin Smith would become a household name?

I have to start out by saying that I was disappointed to see a sexy man like Jason Lee as a bald business man... that may sound superficial, but so was the movie. The best part about the movie was the Sweeney Todd performance (even with the last-minute-dad-saves-the-day WELL overdone routine...) George Carlin was just okay in this movie, and it lacked the sinister humor and perversion we are so used to with Smith's films.

However... it did include a beautiful new Aimee Mann song, so that was cool. Interestingly enough- Kevin Smith had said something before about how he thought Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia was pretentious (or something along those lines.) Yet, he used the same artist on his soundtrack. It's nice to see that just because he didn't like the movie, (to each his own- I thought it was brilliant) he can still appreciate great music.

New Jack City & Dangerous Minds

New Jack City
So Friday after work, I went to Blockbuster Video, and this guy working on "the floor" (helping customers find what they're looking for) walked up to me.
"Are you finding everything you're looking for?"
I said "No... Where is New Jack City? Is it in Drama, or is it in Action?"
"What?"
"New Jack City"
"Is that a movie?"
"Uhhh.. yes?"
"I'm going to have to look in the computer, because I've never heard of it."
He walked over to the computer and looked it up.
"Well, we don't have it, but it IS a movie"
No shit, man. I simply replied with "Thanks. It's good to know I haven't been hallucinating for the last 13 years."

So I went down to this mom and pop store down the road from me and filled out an application, went through the whole "This is how long you rent for... the adult section is over there..." blah blah blah... They had it.

Don't believe the hype. The best thing about it was seeing Wesley Snipes dancing like it was 1988 again. Ice T couldn't act anymore in NJC than he can now. Judd Nelson was in the movie simply to get brat packers to watch a heavily steered black movie. Chris Rock played a junkie- going through withdrawl symptoms, complete with the melodramatic "Please don't make me smoke this crack... pleasepleaseplease... okay." *insert eye roll here*

Dangerous Minds
Michelle Pfeiffer plays an ex-marine (ha!) trying to teach inner-city kids to read poetry. I really tried to like this movie, to no avail. Overall, the movie lacked substance. I should have known- it was a Bruckheimer production. My eyes rolled to high heaven when the white girl said in her ghetto voice "You's our tambourine man." Give me a break.

Sorry, readers. Bad news for movies this weekend. I have an exam tomorrow, so maybe I'll update Tuesday.

Until then...

Spellbound

It's 1999. Eight students are on the wire. Stress levels are high. These students are about to embark on a journey that could change their life forever. They've studied until they can't see the pages anymore.

And every one of them are under the age of 14.

It's not the PSAT's. It's the National Spelling Bee.

This documentary follows the path that these 8 pre-teens travel to get to the National Spelling Bee Championships in Washington DC.

One set of parents drill, drill, drill their son; another set just sits by and lets their daughter go at her own pace; still another set is clueless... "There's a national spelling bee?"

These kids are studying words that they will never even SEE again, let alone USE. I know. I made it to the State finals in 1984. I remember staying up nights, studying words like pseudosyllogism and sphygmomanometer.

But the movie isn't boring like reading the dictionary. One finds themself attatching feelings to the children, even cheering them on. Not to mention, failing at every attempt to spell the words that these kids are spelling without effort. Eventually, the competition heats up and words like tryst and darjeeling are eliminating the kids one by one.

Not only are these kids asking for the definitions of the words, but they are asking for the origin of the words to see if that will give them a better idea how to spell them. In the end, one actually wants to cry for the eliminated ones and clap for the ones who spell the words correctly.

Myself? I'm sitting on the couch, watching, and thinking to myself, "I don't remember studying that much."

I guess that's why I only made it to state.

Getting to Know You

Getting to Know You is a Two Left Shoes production. I currently own no less than 20 TLS movies, one of which is a very good movie by the name of Some Girl with Juliette Lewis, Jeremy Sisto, and Giovanni and Marisa Ribisi. TLS is a production company who entered into contract agreements to be exclusively available at Blockbuster, which is why I own so many.

One would not really expect most of the movies TLS releases to be top entertainment, but they have a certain quality. They have a tendency to cast actors in their movies who give fairly decent performances. Most TLS productions are not seen by the masses. They are reserved for those who either pick out one actor and watch all movies that they are in, or those who have a discerning eye and dare to give an Independent a try.

Getting To Know You stars Heather Matazarro of Welcome to the Dollhouse fame, Bebe Newirth (TV's Cheers, Say Anything), Mary McCormack (Full Frontal, K-Pax), Chris Noth (the infamous Mr. Big from Sex and the City), Michael Weston (Garden State, Coyote Ugly) and a very young Zach Braff. (A-ha! You knew there was a reason I watched this movie, didn't you?)

The nostalgia of watching these characters at a bus station in upstate New York and hearing the announcer say the word "Binghamton" (where I grew up) was a nice little treat for me. Also, I could appreciate the irony of Zach Braff's character going to Rochester (where I attended college) to study medicine- although whether he would turn out to be a doctor like Scrubs' JD remains to be seen.

The movie depicts a day in the life of two teens who were raised by former-star-turned-alcoholic parents. The mother, Trix (Newirth), has been committed to a mental institution, and admittedly, one is reminded of a Sunset Boulevard's Norma Desmond type of character. The teens go to the bus station where they will say goodbye, the brother, Wesley (Braff), off to Rochester for college and the sister, Judith (Matazarro), off to her father's home in Rome, NY. While waiting for the bus, an overprotective Wesley sits and studies while Judith meets Jimmy (Weston), a runaway who has never been out of NY state, but who's hobby is travelling. The two sit and talk and Jimmy makes up wonderful stories about the people in the bus station. The movie turns into a mosaic of 2 short stories that get intertwined with the life of Judith, Trix, and Wesley and the horrors of alcoholism.

Overall, the movie runs pretty slow, and in the end, stick-to-it-iveness pays off, but not handsomely. The story comes to a sweet end, with all being forgiven, and eventually you realize that everyone's going to be okay. Contrasting Braff's innocence and brains with Weston's rebelliousness and creativity, mixed with the feelings both have for Matazarro, makes it a pretty good all-around story.

Garden State

I know... I know... I can't shut the hell up about this movie.

See the trailer: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/garden_state/trailers.php

Anyway, I wasn't able to watch any movies last night because of Scrubs and the VP debates and then... Nip/Tuck- which was a VERY f-ed up episode. Ava is a MAN??? Whoa, daddy...

So today I was checking to see if Garden State had a release date, and apparently, the very talented Zach Braff is trying to get the date pushed up to the Tuesday before Christmas as opposed to the Tuesday after. Smart move!

I've had Frou Frou's song in my head for the past 3 days.

<So let go... let go... jump in...>

It seems to be haunting me. I cannot even watch the trailer to this movie without tears creeping up into my eyes. It can't be hormonal... I don't know what it is.

Saturday I will be 32 years old; I thought when I was a young girl that I'd be in Hollywood by now. Instead, I'm stuck in this job and playing a retarded girl in the "school play". I shouldn't complain- it's better than no work at all. But I can't help but think as I round the bend to yet another birthday that something is missing. And I can't for the life of me figure out what it is. Perhaps it has something to do with the connection I feel to this movie. A shattered relationship with my dad, the feeling of a struggle and not making it, the feeling that I may be wasting time, yet not wanting to rush things and second guessing myself in every move I make...

I guess some people get it and some people don't. All I know is that this must be what purgatory is like. Limbo. Waiting. Knowing neither where to go from here nor how to get there. Anticipation should be enough to get anyone through. So why isn't it??

Get Shorty & Animal House

Last night, we watched Get Shorty and Animal House.

Get Shorty was really a cute movie. I haven't seen it in a very long time. John Travolta was funny, and for once, he didn't dance, which was a nice change. Gene Hackman, Delroy Lindo, and Danny Devito gave good performances; Dennis Farina was very funny, as was a heavily bearded James Gandolfini. The Bette Midler character wasn't as funny as she could have been. And at the risk of sounding shallow- I completely LOVE Renee Russo's hair in this movie. (I like her anyway... she just needs to stay far away from any movie with Costner, as does any fairly decent actor.) I can understand why people would put this movie at the top of their list, if they are not open to the Independant film experience, or if they haven't seen a whole lot of movies. I can name at least 50 movies that are better, and at least 50 that are worse.

Animal House is a completely hilarious movie. Kevin Bacon, Tim Matheson ("I'm your fella, Annabella!"), Tom Hulce, Karen Allen, John Belushi, and a young lady who remarkably resembles a blonde Julianne Moore, but after a closer look, is not. I'm sure everyone has seen it, but John Belushi is just priceless in this movie. His facial expressions...they are just too funny! I feel sorry for lunchladies in the late 70's/early 80's- there must have been countless food fights.
That reminds me of a funny (yet disgusting) story. We had an enormous mural of a Tiger in the Senior Cafeteria at my high school. Every day, we would sit by this enormous tiger and look at it. One day, we noticed that someone had thrown their baked beans up against the wall and they blended perfectly with the color of the tiger. So we would check every day to see if maintenance had noticed the beans and cleaned them off- but they never did. I graduated High School in June of 1990. After High School, I joined the Army and was enlisted for 3 years. In November of 1993, I once again found myself wandering the halls of my High School, feeling nostalgic, and decided to take a walk to the cafeteria. Sure enough, there was the tiger- with the baked beans still splattered on its face. Three and a half years later.

...I wonder if they're still there now.

Purge

Here's some critiques I've posted on the 2 messageboards I belong to. Most of the people who visit here will have already read these, since they're just cut and pasted.

The Village Good movie. Not Shyamalan’s best, though not his worst... a bit predictable.

Elephant Very, very f-ed up movie. Insanely sad how true it is though. Columbine-inspired, the basic story of pissed off kids. It's Slacker meets Bowling for Columbine. And the homo-erotic scene with the 2 teenage boys in the shower- it's not sexy at all. It's just sad.

Antoine Fisher Rocked me to the core. I definitely need to own this movie. The life I had growing up was very complicated, and very similar to his. I was crying my eyes out. Absolutely incredible.

Cold Mountain I'm amazed at all of the actors I knew! Kathy Baker, Ethan Suplee, Jena Malone, Melora Walters, Giovanni Ribisi, Phillip Seymore Hoffman, Donald Sutherland...I had no idea this movie had such a cast! Then again... it was long enough to put half of Hollywood into. Long, yes, but very good. I got goose bumps toward the end.

Collateral Great movie. I really enjoyed it. Why can't more people be like Michael Mann and not Jerry Bruckheimer?

American Splendor and 21 Grams both Superb films

The 1st Spiderman what a waste of time!!!!! It was by far the MOST campy, cheesy, predictable piece of CGI riddled crap I have ever seen. How disappointing.

Oceans 11 with George Clooney. I enjoyed this movie.

Better Off Dead I haven't seen that movie in about 11 years. I WANT MY $2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!TWO DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arlington Road It was in the $5.50 bin at Wall-to-Wall mart last week. I haven't seen that movie since the theater. I really like that movie too!! It really has a new meaning to it since 9-11.

Matchstick Men Okay movie. A little predictable, and Melora Walters is in it. But It's pretty good.

About a Boy Cute movie. Hugh Grant has some really funny lines in this- Probably his 2nd best movie IMO. (Next to Bridget Jones's Diary, of course!!)

Thirteen "Kids" for the new millenium. Except the girl doesn't get... ooops... I don't wanna be a spoiler. (A-HEM!!) Yeah- It's depressing. Holly Hunter was really good, but I kept waiting for her to go "TURN TO THE RIGHT!!!!" I would recommend it, though. It's amazing to see what kids are going through these days- in comparison to what we went through as kids.

I want 3 hours of my life back for these next 2:

Win a Date With Tad Hamilton Very teeny-bopper with absolutely no substance whatsoever. I love Topher Grace, but come on!!

Legally Blonde 2 SO not worth it!! I really thought the 1st one was good but the sequel was a pathetic regurgitation of the original.

I've been watching some pretty lame movies lately. But I am just trying to be accomodating to my sister. I have a list of movies I want to see. I walked around BBV with a pen and paper and wrote all of them down, then typed them up in abc order, printed it, and put it in my handbag. Now, there are a few movies on that list that I have reserved for days when my sister stays with me. I try to be accomodating. I don't always watch crap when she's around, but sometimes I do. She doesn't like the same movies that I like (I believe the words used were "Hellboy is AWESOME!" and "You think The Big Lebowski is funny?" )

So... when it comes to movies that I watch when Kate is around, I'm not proud of them. Hence, Win a Date With Tad Hamilton and Legally Blonde 2.

Our latest endeavor: Starsky & Hutch Piece of crap movie- but Snoop was in it... :D and the soundtrack is great- (I've been into disco lately.) Snoop is the best part of the movie. He rules!

The Secretary with James Spader, Maggie Gyllenhall, and Jeremy Northam. What movie was it exaxtly where Spader became the king of soft-core porn?? It was probably RIGHT after Less Than Zero. My guess is Sex Lies and Videotape. The Secretary reminded me a lot of Boxing Helena. Weird movies.

The Suicide Club Is a Japanese movie (subtitled) about this rash of suicides. At first, I thought it was going to be like Heathers. Then it seemed dark and creepy like Strangeland- but not stupid. And the entire nation is fascinated with this teeny-bopper band. It's a very cool movie. Japanese suspense. Who'd've thunk it?

The Human Stain Pretty good. Nicole Kidman was good as a white trash whore for once... and Ed Harris... mmmmm!!!

The Ladykillers Great. VERY Cohen Brothers. "You brought yo bitch to da Waffle Hut??" LMAO

Hope Floats Crap. Horrible pathetic attempt at a romantic comedy. I swear, Heather Graham hasn't done a single thing right since Twin Peaks. Except for Rollergirl.

Radio Good movie.Especially touching when you see the real "Radio" at the end.

Secret Window Very good movie. Surprisingly, Kate called it! I couldn't predict it, even though I'm usually the first one to ruin the ending for everyone.

Lost in Translation is one of my favorite movies. I loved loved loved loved loved loved it. I think you need to watch it more than once to truly appreciate it (and perhaps know someone who appreciates it as well.) I actually think it may have knocked someone out of my top 10.

Dummy Cute little movie with Adrian Brody. Nothing to write home about, but not a bad movie. I have to say I actually had reservations renting it, because on the back it said "This movie recommended for people who like these movies:" and it had a list of movies that I saw and didn't like- Elephant was one of them. But Dummy was cute.

Super Troopers It was funny, but not as funny as I expected it to be.

Amores Perros Everyone should see this movie. It is very well done. A little long, but 3 very gripping stories.

This weekend I went to the movies 3 times. I saw Napoleon Dynamite with my friend Matt. He hadn't seen it yet. He called me as I waited for him at the entrance to the theater, and he swung by the entrance and picked me up. We went to find a parking space and he said "Here- put these in your purse." He handed me 2 small bottles of Jack Daniels, saying "2 for you and 2 for me" and put the other 2 in his pocket. I felt like I was back in high school- it was so much fun. We went and bought the tickets and a large coke each and poured the JD in- we were pretty buzzed by the time the dancing scene came on, which made it so much funnier!!!

I also went yesterday to the theater that's a little cheaper than the other theaters and watched Garden State again. I don't know what it is about that movie that makes me cry so much. I think it's the point where Large's dad says "We will be okay as soon as you forgive yourself for what you've done." It reminds me of the part in Good Will Hunting where Robin Williams keeps saying "It's not your fault..." And the whole "Period/Ellipses" thing at the end of the movie- it's too wonderful.

And Saturday, as usual, Marcio and I went to the theater. It was my week to choose, so I chose Shaun of the Dead It was absolutely hilarious! If you like British comedy and Zombie movies, this is definitely one you shouldn't miss!!

Then I watched a few videos. (I know, I know, but it was a really long boring weekend and I had no homework)I watched Dogville with Nicole Kidman. Pretty interesting movie. Interesting concept to not have a set. I thought it ended really well too.

And I FINALLY saw Coffee and Cigarettes. Not a superb film, but it was interesting. Each story had it's charm, and it's great for people who like music as much as people who like movies. The best scene was "Bill Mother f-in' Murray" with the Wu-Tang Clan. It was pretty funny overall.
